Linda McMahon has been selected by President-Elect Donald Trump to be the next Secretary of Education. She is a billionaire co-founder of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and currently serves as co-chair of Trump’s transition team. Trump has praised her work during the transition and outlined her main goals for the Education Department.
He stated that McMahon will work hard to expand school choice in every state. Trump wants to return education control to the states and has chosen McMahon to lead this initiative.
McMahon has been a long-time supporter of Trump and has financially backed his campaigns. She contributed over $800,000 to Trump’s 2024 campaign and played a significant role in fundraising. In the 2020 election cycle, she raised $83 million for the America First Action super PAC.
She has political experience, having served as the Administrator of the Small Business Administration (SBA) from 2017 to 2019. McMahon also chaired America First Action and helped raise funds for Trump’s 2020 re-election.
Despite her solid political background, some question her lack of direct experience in education. However, she supports school choice and charter schools. Her time on the Connecticut Board of Education and the board of Sacred Heart University shows her interest in education.
McMahon’s nomination fits with Trump’s education reform vision, which includes dismantling the Department of Education and giving power back to state governments. This plan, while controversial, is a central part of Trump’s agenda and raises questions about feasibility without congressional support.
McMahon’s career has not been without controversy. She left her position as WWE CEO to pursue politics and ran for the U.S. Senate in Connecticut twice but did not win. She is currently facing a lawsuit involving WWE that accuses her and other executives of allowing abuse by a former staff member. Her team has denied these claims, calling them false.
In addition to McMahon’s appointment, Trump’s transition team has chosen Howard Lutnick, founder of Cantor Fitzgerald, to be the Commerce Secretary. Like McMahon, Lutnick has a history of supporting Trump’s initiatives.
As she prepares for her new role, McMahon’s leadership will be under close scrutiny. Many are curious about how her untraditional background will impact her ability to bring about the changes she has promised in U.S. education. The future will reveal the outcome of her efforts.
