China Slams US Over Student Visa Revocation
China has fiercely condemned the US decision to revoke student visas, calling it a “political and discriminatory” act that undermines international academic exchange. The move, announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has triggered a formal protest from China’s foreign ministry, which accused the US of using national security as a pretext to suppress Chinese students.
Spokesperson Mao Ning criticized the decision as an attack on the “legitimate rights and interests” of Chinese students and a blow to cultural exchange. She warned that such actions damage the US’s global image and credibility. The new policy aims to target students with alleged ties to the Chinese Communist Party or those studying in sensitive fields, raising concerns about ideological discrimination.
China sent over 277,000 students to the US in the 2023–24 academic year, making them a key contributor to the American education sector. Critics argue that this visa crackdown, paired with social media screening and funding cuts to elite universities, reflects a broader political agenda.
Beijing has urged Washington to protect the rights of international students and preserve academic cooperation. The dispute now threatens to deepen already strained China-US relations.
