600 Trapped in Jenin Hospital Amid Israeli Escalation
Tension in the West Bank has reached a peak after Israeli forces surrounded a hospital and a refugee camp in Jenin, fearing the situation might worsen into a humanitarian crisis. Reports have confirmed that Israeli forces have laid a siege on the Khalil Suleiman government hospital and the Jenin refugee camp, keeping medical aid and supplies from reaching the area.
At least 10 Palestinians are reported killed, more than 40 wounded by the Palestinian health ministry. The Palestinian Red Crescent said ambulances were prevented from reaching badly needed victims. More than 600 people, including patients and medical personnel, are stuck in the hospital with dwindling food and water supplies.
The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have described their operations as a shift in the security strategy’ to target terror groups in the West Bank. However, the strong blockade, the number of checkpoints, and the violence have been widely criticised by human rights organizations. Attacks on refugee camps in the region have increased, and there are reports of settlers torching properties and vehicles to make life difficult for vulnerable populations.
With the siege continuing to tighten, there are growing fears about the delivery of humanitarian aid to the affected populations. International organizations and local leaders are calling for action to be taken immediately to prevent further escalation of the situation and to relieve the suffering of refugees in the region.
